Volunteer With Us

The Fort Smith Volunteer Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department is comprised of a dedicated group of volunteers trained to respond to structure fires, motor vehicle accidents, and urban/wildland interface wildfires, and provide high-quality pre-hospital health care and ambulance transportation as well as other emergencies.

These volunteers are our neighbours, friends and family who have committed to keeping the Town of Fort Smith safe while contributing back to their community.

Consider joining the team. All required training is provided.

How Can I Apply?

An individual interested in joining the Volunteer Fire & EMS Department should do the following:

When Can I Apply?

There are two recruitment drives, one during spring and one in the fall. Contact protectiveservices@fortsmith.ca to get exact dates.

What are the Requirements to Volunteer?

To serve as a Fire & EMS Volunteer, you must:

Be legally eligible to work in Canada
Be 18 years of age or older
Hold a valid Class 5 driver's license, be able to pass a driver's medical and be willing to obtain a Class 4 license with air brake endorsement
Provide a satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal records check
Provide a satisfactory driver's abstract

Experience in EMS & Fire responses is helpful, but not necessary. All training is provided to new members.

Is This a Good fit for my Schedule?

Being a Fire & EMS Volunteer depends on you being within the Municipal boundaries of the Town of Fort Smith. Members need to attend Wednesday practices, take on at around 15 hours of on-call time each week, and respond to calls whenever they are in town.

Based on previous trends, being a volunteer may be challenging if they:

Do not live in Fort Smith year-round
Work an out-of-town rotational job
Hold a seasonal wildfire job
