Public Notice: Lead Testing at Town Facilities

Type(s)
Public Notice

The Town of Fort Smith would like to inform residents that recent water testing at Town facilities has found lead levels that require follow-up and action.

We understand this may cause concern, and we want to reassure residents that this issue is being taken seriously and addressed as a priority. Additional testing is underway to confirm the initial results, and steps have already been taken to reduce any risk. The Town has also sent samples to a laboratory in Yellowknife for detailed testing to confirm the presence and levels of lead in each building. We will share updates as results become available.

In the coming days, residents visiting Town facilities may notice measures such as flushing water systems, installing filters, replacing fixtures, and providing bottled drinking water. These measures may change as we learn more, and any updates will be communicated.

Residents who would like to test the water in their homes are encouraged to use a reliable testing service and submit samples to an accredited lab. The Town can confirm that there are no issues at the Water Plant, and the water leaving the plant does not show lead levels. The Town will not be providing testing for private homes, as homeowners are responsible for their own plumbing systems.

Residents are encouraged to learn more about lead exposure and how it can affect health. Helpful resources include:

  • GNWT Health and Social Services
  • Health Canada

As we develop long-term solutions, we will continue to share information and next steps. We are committed to keeping residents informed.

Thank you for your patience. The health and safety of our community remains our top priority.
