Cradled by the Slave River and surrounded by boreal forest, Fort Smith is a beautiful town to visit and call home. However, its beauty isn’t restricted to the surrounding environment. Fort Smith is also home to breathtaking attractions, including the Thebacha Trail, Slave River Look Out, and the Fort Smith Mission Historical Park. It’s also a just a short drive to Queen Elizabeth Territorial Park and Wood Buffalo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world’s largest Dark Sky Preserve. The Slave River Lookout was created after a tragic landslide on Aug. 9, 1968 cleared trees and homes from the riverbank. A plaque commemorates the day and a fire pit and viewing platform overlook the renowned Rapids of the Drowned.

Town activities cater to creating a scenic and friendly community. The annual Christmas Lighting contest is judged by Town councilors and those with a green thumb can reserve a plot in the community garden at the Fort Smith Mission Historical Park by calling 867-872-6439.
