Rapids of the Drowned - Slave River

Rapids of the Drowned - Slave River

Looking for a close up view of the American White Pelican? This is the spot! You can sit and be entertained here all day and well into the night with the sun staying high in the sky until past midnight! The Rapids of the Drowned are the most visible rapids in Fort Smith. They are the rapids beside which the community is situated, and can be seen from “The Lookout” on Marine Drive. These rapids are a designated Historic Site of Canada.

Many of the community’s hiking and walking trails intersect and run along the riverbank overlooking these rapids. One of the most popular trails leads down to The Rocks, where you can sit on the smooth rocks of the Canadian Shield and watch the pelicans, up close,  feeding in the roaring whitewater rapids.
