The Town of Fort Smith is searching for a summer student as a Community Services Assistant for the Visitor Information Centre (VIC). 

OUTLINE OF THE POSITION

Reporting to the Economic & Tourism Development Officer, the Community Services Assistant 1 Visitor Information Staff will provide visitors with information about the town of Fort Smith, promote and assist with local events and activities and provide guided tours of the community. This position works in partnership with Wood Buffalo National Park Visitor Centre Staff.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Providing information to patrons about the community and region.
  • Lead interpretative talks to visitors.
  • Understand and (when necessary) implement Emergency Operating Procedures.
  • Open and/or close the Visitor Information Centre.
  • Complete security checks, collecting statistical data or any paperwork outlined in daily schedules. 
  • Assist with set up and clean-up for special events (including National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations, Canada Day, Paddlefest, etc.)
  • Assist with the preparation and delivery of programs during special events.
  • Work directly with the Parks Canada Visitor team to provide information about Wood Buffalo National Park.
  • Assist with the set up and breakdown of facilities and/or equipment and storage of equipment. 
  • Respond quickly to potentially hazardous situations and accidents.
  •  Provide visitor guides, town maps and marketing material to visitors.
  • Assist in booking visitors into guided experiences.
  • Attend the Visitor Information Centre alone when necessary.

KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 

  • Grade 10 or equivalent education.
  • Education or experience in any of the following: tourism, recreation, sport, arts and culture.
  • Experience in customer service is an asset.
  • Summer students are encouraged to apply. 
  • First Aid and CPR certification and Class 5 driver’s license would be an asset.
  • The work may be physically demanding. The ability to walk outdoors while sharing stories and carrying a backpack will be required.
  • Satisfactory criminal record check is a required.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • Pay Level/Range:  Level 12 ($64,985.95- $73,978.45)
  • Opportunity to gain valuable work experience.
