The Photographer’s Dream

Day 1

  • Hike down to the trail at Little Buffalo Falls to capture the majestic thrill of the waterfalls.
  • Drive along the highway (highway 5) to your next stop: Canada’s largest salt flats in Wood Buffalo National Park using the Salt Plains lookout and trail to take you down to the flats and explore the unique landscape.
  • Watch for bison and bears as you continue along the highway into Fort Smith.
  • Book a night sky tour with the Thebacha and Wood Buffalo Astronomical Society at the only northern observatory in the NWT. Get to know the night sky, constellations, and other visible sky objects. View astronomical objects through high powered telescopes and contemplate the universe. Book a minimum of 24 hours in advance by calling Mike C at (867) 872-0243. Fees start at $15.00/adult, $5.00/child

Day 2

  • Look for more wildlife shots along the Pine Lake Road in Wood Buffalo National Park. Stop at various pullouts along the way to explore and hopefully get a glimpse of fox, lynx, bison, bears, birds, and more!
  • For must-see photography and Instagram spots hike down to the Rapids of the Drowned at sunset to view Fort Smith’s pelican flock and enjoy the serenity of the mighty Slave River rapids. For information on accessing hiking trails near Fort Smith click here: Fort Smith Trail Map
