Mayor's Message November 11, 2020
Earlier today, we learned that the Office of the Chief Public Health officer identified and confirmed the NWT's 11th recorded COVID-19 case in Fort Smith.
The following is an excerpt from the statement about the case from the NWT Office of the Chief Public Health Officer (CPHO):
"The case is related to travel outside the territory. The individual, along with household contacts, are all appropriately isolated. There has been no risk identified to the community as appropriate self-isolation procedures were followed by members of the household after travel. There are no outstanding contacts within the NWT. The household is being monitored and public health is providing necessary supports. No further details will be provided to protect privacy."

The successful containment is an example of how following self-isolation protocols after returning from travel outside the NWT can help limit the virus's spread. It is critical that people who travel outside the NWT self-isolate responsibly upon their return.
We encourage residents to continue following the recommendations of the CPHO, including wearing masks, practising physical distancing, and handwashing, and following the restrictions about gatherings.
For more information about the CPHO recommendations and protocols, please see the GNWT Emerging Wisely Public Health Risk Assessment at https://www.gov.nt.ca/covid-19/en/emerging-wisely-sortable-risk-assessment.
Our local stores have implemented practices to protect their staff and customers, and we ask you to respect and embrace the measures they have put in place for the benefit and safety of everyone.
Thank you for your patience and kindness.
