Fort Smith Ski Club & Nordic Centre

Fort Smith Ski Club & Nordic Centre

Cross-country skiers have many choices for adventure in Fort Smith. The scenic trails offer fantastic views of the Slave River and its rapids below. The centre has an active Biathlon program as well as a youth ski programs.

The Fort Smith Ski Club has a network of over 15 km of well-groomed trails suitable for light touring, skating or backcountry skiing and 1.5 km of lit trails for night skiing.

The trails wind through the boreal forest and offer panoramic views of the river and surrounding landscape. The trails start at the ski clubhouse and biathlon range just four kilometers east of town on Highway #5 (same access road as the golf course).

Every year on the first Saturday in March the Fort Smith Ski Club organizes the Thebacha Loppet from Fort Fitzgerald, AB  to Fort Smith, NWT. Skiers of all skill levels and ages travel along the old 27 kilometer portage route that bypassed the Slave River rapids; which is now a part of the TransCanada trail. There are checkpoints along the way where friendly volunteers serve refreshments around a campfire.
