Garbage Cart Program

By Friday morning at 7:00AM, your cart must be placed at the end of your driveway at the edge of the road. There must be clearance on all sides of the cart to ensure the garbage truck arm can complete the pick-up.

After collection, ensure your garbage cart is moved away from the roadways to the side or rear of your house.

Residential Garbage Pick-Up:

Bell Rock & West of King Street - Thursdays
King Street & East of King Street - Fridays

Please ensure your garbage carts are at the end of your driveway, on the edge of the road, by 7:00AM 

to ensure your garbage is collected.

The items that can be placed in the garbage carts has not changed from what can be picked up now. Please ensure all household garbage is bagged & the garbage cart can properly close.

Here are some examples of things that can NOT go in the cart:

• Hazardous waste (such as paint or flammable chemicals)
• Animal or human waste
• Construction materials
• Cart parts or tires
• Yard waste & soil
• Scrap Metal

(The above items can be taken directly to the landfill for proper disposal)

Boxes can be brought directly to the landfill, or compacted to fit in a garbage bag that can fit in the garbage carts.

If you wish to re-purpose your garbage bin, ensure that it is moved to your backyard before May 17th, 2026. Garbage bins still at the edge of the roadways will be removed and brought to the landfill.

Residents will be responsible for maintaining their cart and keeping it clean. The carts are durable and can be stored indoors or outdoors. If possible, it should be stored away from direct sunlight.

There is a 50kg weight restriction per cart. Garbage also needs to be properly placed with the lid fully closed.

Your cart is registered to the home, so it stays at the current address. The cart remains property of the Town of Fort Smith.

The garbage carts cannot be locked when placed roadside on collection days. The motorized arm that lifts the cart upwards requires the lid to move freely.

If necessary, you may consider a non-permanent solution (bungee cord, etc.) to secure the lid during the week. 

Yes. Residents in bell rock will receive garbage service on Thursdays.

If a statutory or civic holiday interferes with garbage pick-up, another date will be determined to ensure the serviced is received. Notice will be posted in the same manner as it is now.

Residents are responsible for ensuring there is ample clearance around the garbage carts to allow the truck to pick them up.

Garbage carts remain the property of the Town of Fort Smith, however; residents who wish to customize their cart may do so with removable or temporary options like stickers. 

Do not use spray paint, etching or any permanent method to mark your cart.

Do not cover markings or bar codes.

This will be accepted if bagged properly inside cart.
