There are many ways to travel to Fort Smith. The community is connected by road year-round to the reliable NWT Highway system. In the winter, an ice road through Wood Buffalo National Park connects Fort Smith to Fort Chipewyan and Fort McMurray, both in Alberta.

Daily air service to Fort Smith is provided by a local airline that offers scheduled flights to and from Yellowknife and Edmonton.

For canoeists, Fort Smith’s location on the banks of the Slave River makes it accessible by water from almost anywhere in Canada.
