The Healthy Family Program & OKOK Free Play Group - Every Wednesday 10:15 am to 11:45 am at the Recreation & Community Centre. Transportation provided by Border Cabs. Questions call Amy 872-4355.


The Healthy Family Program is putting on a free swim for expecting moms and families with children under 5 years. It is being  held every Monday begining February 7, 2011 from 1 to 2 p.m. Each child must wear a "Little Swimmer" (these can be purchased at the Recreation Centre for $1.00) and be accompanied by an adult while in the pool. Contact Amy Ryan 872-4355 for more information.

Red Cross Swim Lessons starts September 24, 2011. Preschool and Swim kids swim lessons begin September 24 and run to November. Lessons take place between 9 am - Noon. Limited spaces so register early.  

Cost Preschool Swim - $25.00/session; Swim Kids - $35.00/session Register at the Pool or the Recreation Centre.

Bronze Medallion - September 23 to 25 - Register at the Recreation Centre or Swimming Pool

Bronze Medallion is designed for those wishing to become a lifeguard. Intensive weekend course. Participants must be 13 years old or possess  Bronze Star.  

Cost for the course is $160.00. Register at the Pool or the Recreation Centre.

Bronze Cross - October 14 to 16, 2011 - Register at the Swimming Pool or Recreation Centre

Bronze Cross is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including and introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. Completing Bronze Cross also certifies the swimmer with a CPR-C certificate. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for all advanced training programs including National Lifeguard and Instructor certification.  

Cost for the course is $180.00. Register at the Pool or the Recreation Centre

NLS/AEC Weekends November 18 - 20 and November 25 - 27, 2011 - Register at the Swimming Pool or call 872-2200

National Lifeguard (NLS) certification is recognized as the standard for lifeguards in Canada. NLS training develops the basic lifeguarding skills, principles and decision making process to help lifeguards create a safe and enjoyable facility. This course teaches lifeguards to prevent emergencies and if necessary respond effectively. Includes Aquatic Emergency Care, the standard in lifeguarding first aid. Prerequisite(s):  16 years of age, Bronze Cross.

NLS is running at the Fort Smith Pool. Cost is $320.00.

National Lifeguard (NLS) certification is current for a period of two years from the date of the exam. This recertification exam retests all skill items as well as provides any updated information. Successful completion of this exam will extend the certification for another two years. Cost is $85.


Every Wednesday morning there is a  Play Group for families with children 5 years and under, in the Recreation Centre gym from 10 am to 11:45 - free for all Fort Smith families and put on by the Healthy Family Program and OKOF.
