Trans Canada Trail

The Trans Canada Trail is a 21,500-kilometre recreational trail winding its way through every province and territory, from the Atlantic to Pacific to Arctic Oceans. When completed, it will be the world's longest recreational trail, linking close to 1,000 communities and over 33 million Canadians. Thousands of people use the Trail to walk, hike, cycle, ski, horseback ride, canoe, and snowmobile.

In Fort Smith, the Trans Canada Trail has both land and water components. The entire Slave River, from the Peace-Athabasca Delta in Alberta to Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories, is part of the Trail as a water route.

On land, the Trail follows the 30 km portage route around the four sets of Slave River rapids, and then continues to where the Salt River meets the Slave River. This stretch of the Trail is known as the DesNethe Discovery Trail.

Along this route there are many trail diversions down the bank and into viewing sites of all four sets of rapids. The trails in this area are multi-purpose and are enjoyed by hikers, cyclists, skiers, snowmobilers, and ATV and dirt bike drivers.
