Northern Life Museum and Cultural Centre
photo by Jessica CoxNorthern Life Museum and Cultural Centre is a gem for history buffs and cultural enthusiasts. It features impressive cultural and natural collections from the region known historically as Thebacha (northern Alberta and the southern Northwest Territories).
The museum’s upper galleries showcase the traditional lifestyle of the First Nations and Métis people of this region, including traditional arts and crafts. The galleries also depict how exploration and development affected the people of the region. Among the highlights of the upper galleries are CANUS the Whooping Crane, a replica birchbark canoe, and an original copy of Treaty 8.
The lower galleries are often used to display the works of local artists, including photography, painting, quilting, and carving.
The Aboriginal Cultural Centre is a new addition to the museum. The centre provides visitors with an interactive experience with the traditional lifestyles of local First Nations and Métis.
The museum also operates Fort Smith Mission Historic Park, in cooperation with the territorial department of Industry, Tourism and Investment.
