Kayaking
photo by John McKinnonWhitewater adventure-seekers from around the world travel to Fort Smith every summer to explore the four sets of rapids on the Slave River.
A kayaker’s delight, the Slave River features an immense volume of water through a 25-km labyrinth of channels among Canadian Shield-granite islands.
The Slave River’s four major ledge systems – Cassette, Pelican, Mountain, and Rapids of the Drowned – produce some of the biggest and best whitewater in the world. These ledge systems provide limitless options for the paddling pleasure of beginners and experts.

If you are an experienced paddler and interested in getting out on the river, please contact the Fort Smith Paddling Club.
